The Beaches in Newport Beach
There are eight miles of beachfront from Santa Ana River Jetty along the Peninsula down to the Wedge. The Wedge is located at the end of the Peninsula. The Wedge is the result of a granite boulder jetty that was built by the Army Corps of Engineers in the mid-1930s. The purpose of the construction of the 2000 foot granite boulder jetty was to originally protect the entrance to Newport Harbor. its construction was to protect Newport Harbor. The boulder jetty forces one wave to crash back into another wave.
The Wedge is known for its pounding surf and waves as high as 30 feet. When there is a south or a south/southwest swell, the Wedge can produce waves up to 30 feet high. The Wedge is for the extremely experienced body surfer, surfer or body surfing. It is a great place to spectate.
Balboa Peninsula Beach is anywhere along the Balboa Peninsula, and the beaches are wide and do have lifeguards. Lifeguards are only manned during the summer months. If you are not an experienced swimmer, it is a good idea to check with the lifeguard about the water conditions and if there are any rip tides.
Corona del Mar State Beach is near the intersection of Iris Street and Ocean Boulevard in Corona del Mar, there is an access road to take you down to the beach. Although it is a State Park, it is operated by the City of Newport Beach.
From December to April, the Balboa Peninsula, Corona del Mar State Park, and Crystal Cove State Park are great locations for whale watching.
Dogs are never allowed on the beach or any beachfront sidewalk between the hours of 10 am. and 4:30 pm, including the oceanfront beaches and bayfront beaches. Dogs can be on the beaches before 10 am and after 4:30 pm that are on a leash.
Off-leash dogs are never allowed in public spaces including parks and the beaches in Newport Beach,
Surfing
There are numerous popular surfing locations in Newport Beach. A very popular location is Blackies. Blackies is located north of the Newport Beach Pier, located near Lifeguard Tower 22. This is a great location for beginners and longboarders. The surf is relatively consistent. It can get crowded, so it is best to go early.
Newport Point is located right near 18th Street on the Peninsula when the location changes from southwest to south.
56th Street in Newport Beach is a very popular surf location and can get crowded. 56th has consistent waves. The River Jetties is located at the mouth of the Santa Ana River. It is a very popular surf location, however, it is not a good idea to surf this location either during or after a rainstorm due to water conditions.
Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program
The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is an ocean-based program that focuses on ocean safety, beach safety, ocean swimming, and much more. This program is for youth 9 to 15 years old. The program lasts for 7 weeks during the summer. There is a pier jump and the infamous Monster Mile, where the kids run a mile and swim back a mile. The program is taught by Newport Beach Lifeguards.
There are try-outs earlier in the year in March. Please check the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard website.
The kids should practice for the test. Many of the communities have pools that are heated for the children to practice. The Newport Shores pool is heated for Newport Shores residents, and there are many programs that the children may participate in.
