The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program is held every summer at the Balboa Pier on the beach, and it is a very popular program for residents of Newport Beach. The minimum age is 9 years old and tryouts are in February. The Balboa Pier is one of two piers, the other is the Newport Pier at McFadden Place.
Balboa Pier Location
The Balboa Pier has dining and shopping and is located right on the boardwalk. Enjoy local favorites such as Cabo Cantina and BJ Pizzeria and if you want to enjoy Peninsula Park it is located right in front of the sand and is a lovely grassy area.
The pier extends out into the Pacific Ocean and has gorgeous views of the beaches, waves, and coastline. It is a great place to watch the sunset.

Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards
The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is an ocean-based program for junior lifeguards. The age range for the junior guards are from 9 to 15 years old. The program focuses on educating participants about the beach and the ocean and understanding potential hazards. Junior guard participants will learn about ocean safety. Many activities include the Monster Mile and the Pier Jump. It is an exciting program for the youth to participate in.
The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Foundation has partnered with the City of Newport Beach to raise funds to build a new building which will be the Junior Lifeguard training. The building is currently under construction and located right at the Balboa Pier.
