It was Red Flag!! Yesterday and today, the Wedge was going off with big waves. Not as big as I have seen before, but still I would not go into the water under those conditions. The Newport Beach Lifeguards are out in force!!
You can always tell when the waves are big at the Wedge, as there is lots of traffic flocking to see the waves, multiple news vans and loads of spectators!!!! It can be difficult to find a parking spot, but I always love to see the waves in Newport Beach at the Wedge.
The Wedge is famous for it’s large waves. It is generally not a “surfing spot” however I have seen surfers attempt to take these waves.
The Wedge in Newport Beach is for the experience body boarder, or body surfer, or surfer. These are not conditions for the inexperienced. The waves can be so big, and the location next to the jetty at the entrance to Newport Harbor can be very treacherous!
So I hope you get the opportunity to come and see the waves when the Wedge is going off! And make sure you heed the Lifeguard advice.
Sharon…what great pictures you captures of these waves. I remember once when I went to Acapulco and we went north of the city for the day. The wave were as tall as a HOUSE, I kid you not! I never got much more than knee high in that water considering I can’t swim!
Can hardly wait to come visit you one day!
Hi Thom – thanks much! I thought they were going to be much bigger, in fact I drove down again yesterday and they were not as big. However, the spectators and news vans were there again! I can hardly wait for you to visit too!
Sharon – the waves look fantastic, but i wouldn’t want to be in the water with anything that used human power.
