Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Try-Outs Approaching Quickly . . .
Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Try-Outs Approaching Quickly . . .

This is a reminder to you that the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Try-Outs are beginning this weekend on February 7, 2010 – that’s right – on Superbowl Sunday! There is plenty of time to take your child for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Try-outs which are going to be held at the Newport Harbor High School Pool deck. Make sure to bring:
-
Your child’s proof of age.
-
3 forms of identification (i.e. driver’s license, utility bill, car registration).
Make sure you are prepared! Hopefully, your child has been swimming and is ready to meet the requirements set by the Newport Beach Lifeguards. The requirements are to swim four laps – a total of 100 yards in the time set below:
“A” (14-15 year olds): 1:35 (one minute, 35 seconds)
“B” (12-13 year olds): 1:40 (one minute, 40 seconds)
“C” (10-11 year olds): 1:45 (one minute, 45 seconds)
“D” ( 9 year olds): 1:55 (one minute, 55 seconds)
The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard program is an amazing program. My daughters both participated in the program and I cannot say enough good things about it. It is organized, professional, educational, competitiveand fun for the kids. My older daughter Heather was competitive in the program, and today is a Huntington State Beach Lifeguard. Although my daughters are past this time frame, the program definitely was something they enjoyed and benefitted from.
The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is held at the Balboa Pier by A Street at the Junior Lifeguard headquarters. The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program begins on Monday, June 28th, 2010 and ends on Tuesday, August 17th.
I have three favorite events for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program:
-
The Hot Dog Dinner – a tradition which is enjoyed by both the kids and their family and friends.
-
The Pier Jump – where all the kids line up, and the lifeguards and their support staff are in the water, and the kids jump approximately 30′ into the water. This is NOT mandatory!
-
The Monster Mile – this event is fun for both the kids and their parents alike. The kids show up on the day of the “Monster Mile” dressed up like “monsters“! After the parade, there is a competitive one mile run in the sand, followed by a one mile swim back. The kids are grouped according to their age, and they wear swim caps for each age group. It truly is an amazing site. You can see the kids swimming back in the photo below:

So, here is your opportunity to take part in this awesome program. The try-outs are only in February. You can’t decide in June that you want to be in the program – does not work that way. The swim try-out dates are below:
Sunday, February 7th – 9:00am – 12:00pm
Sunday, February 14th – 9:00am – 12:00pm
Tuesday, February 16th – 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Sunday, February 21st – 9:00am – 12:00pm
Tuesday, February 23rd – 7:00pm – 8:30pm
Sunday, February 28th – 9:00am – 12:00pm

Giant Squid Invasion in Newport Beach
Giant Squid Invasion in Newport Beach
These Giant Squids have become very prevalent in the waters off Newport Beach. The fishing has increased, and anglers are catching them. The Giant Squid on the average weigh between 20-40 pounds, and some being caught are as large as 60 pounds. There are articles and photos of fisherman holding them up, and they are several feet long! Some of these giant squid can grow up to be as large as 100 pounds.
A representative from Newport Landing Sportfishing told The Orange County Register that anglers in Southern California area have caught approximately 400 giant squid since Friday night.
So I am not so sure now is the time to go diving in these Newport Beach waters – that would be scary to see a 60 pound giant squid!

A Southern California Tradition – The Rose Parade
A Southern California Tradition – The 121st Rose Parade
The 121st Rose Parade will be held on January 1st, 2010 beginning at 8am in Pasadena. The parade route begins on Orange Grove in Pasadena, and turns onto Colorado. If you are in the vicinity, the area is completely set up with bleachers and stands for the viewing public.
There are millions of fans watch the parade from the actual route, and of course on television. I am not going to be there in person this year, however, I do get up early on New Years Day and enjoy watching all the floats, equestrian units and the marching bands. There is also the Royal Court with the Rose Queen, and these are local contestants who try out for the event.
The Rose Parade also has a Grand Marshall, and this year for 2010 it is truly one of America’s heros – Captain Chesley Sullenberger III. Captain Sullenberger became famous when he was successful in carrying out the emergency ditching of the US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River. The ditching was offshore from Manhattan in New York City, on January 15, 2009. Captain Sullenberger’s tremendous efforts saved the lives of ALL 155 people on the aircraft.
The Rose Parade is a spirited and fun event. With spectacular floats decorated with all different types of flowers which create very beautiful and maginificent floral floats. Along with the floats are the equestrian units, and the marching bands from all over. The theme for the Rose Parade in Pasadena is “A Cut Above the Rest“. I encourage you to watch the parade if possible. Seeing the floral floats live is amazing, there is incredible detail which is appreciated. Many cities enter the Rose Parade as well as companies.
And of course, along with tradition, the schools that are playing in the Rose Bowl which is also going to be held on January 1, 2010 enter both floats and their marching bands. This year, the Universities playing in the Rose Bowl will be the number 8 BCS (Bowl Championship Series) ranked Ohio State Buckeyes versus the number 7 BCS-ranked Oregon Ducks.
If you get the opportunity to view the parade in person, it truly is an experience. I have seen it live many times and have camped on the parade route. It really is a fun experience bringing in the New Year with friends and family (and sometimes chilly). And at the conclusion of the parade, there is a viewing place where you can view the floats live.
Ticket information may be found here for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl.
Here is wishing you all a Happy and Healthy New Year.

Newport Shores in Newport Beach – A Beach Community
Newport Shores in Newport Beach – A Beach Community

Newport Shores in Newport Beach is located at the west end of Newport Beach and is literally across the street from the beach. Newport Shores has approximately 440 homes located in the area, andit also has a clubhouse, pool, tennis court, sand volley ball court, basketball court anda play ground for children for the residents. Newport Shores is a beach style community to live in. You can easily ride your bike to the Newport Pier or the Huntington Beach Pier. And there are activities throughout the year from Fourth of July parades and activities, Memorial Day barbecue, swim team during the summer months, tennis tournaments, and of course the Newport Shores Holiday Home Tour. The pool is heated during the summer months, and there is also a Newport Shores Swim Team. The swim team does compete against swim teams in the Newport Beach area. There is also a lifeguard on duty during the summer months at the Newport Shores pool.

Newport Shores is a very diverse area which is right across from one of the most popular beaches in Newport Beach. There are a couple of very popular surfing spots located right out front at 68th Street, and surfers also enjoy the River Jetty. Many surfers enjoy the location because on Coast Highway, outside of Newport Shores is the infamous Frog House which is a popular surf store.

The river jetty also is a place where you can take your dog and allow them to run off leash. And I see people there all during the year taking their dogs down to the beach for a swim in the surf.

Time for a swim in the water!

The River Jetty seperates Newport Beach and Huntington State Beach. You can see the Lifeguard Towers in Huntington State Beach from Newport.

Newport Shores is surrounded by the Canal (Canal Street to 62nd street – the water ends stops over by Cappy’s Restaurant) and land which is in essence a bird sanctuary. There are Great Blue herons, white herons, ducks, wood ducks, seagulls, pelicans and currently there is a beautiful white swan residing here. The pelicans typically only visit on the winter, and they are spectacular to watch.

In the past several of years, there were also geese that lived in the Canal. The geese were very friendly and they could be hand fed.
The Newport Shores Canal is fed by the ocean andthe water level rises along with the tide. Some of the residents of Newport Shores enjoy the canal by kayaking, canoeing anda very popular activity now is stand up paddle boarding. This is great core exercise.

Newport Shores is a beach community with many activities. Newport Shores is a very friendly neighborhood. Early in the year, there are swimming conditioning programs for Newport Shores children to participate in as they are preparing for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program.
Fourth of July is a big holiday in Newport Beach and definitely in Newport Shores. Every Fourth of July, there is a parade for the residents, by the residents of Newport Shores. Everyone shows up with their children dressed up, their dogs with holiday attire, bicycles, skate boards and even golf carts decorated for the day. Fourth of July is a great holiday to be enjoyed by all. The parade goes around the community, and at the end of the parade, the Newport Beach Fire Department typically shows up with a Fire Truck which every always enjoys.

Newport Shores features Tennis Tournaments during different times of the year. Depending upon the number of participants, the players are placed into teams. There were participants from the Shores as well as the surrounding area.

If you have any questions about Newport Shores in Newport Beach, or are interested in any real estate in the area, please contact me. It is a very desirable community, that allows residents to enjoy the beach lifestyle.

Celebrating the Holidays at the Beach
Celebrating the Holidays at the Beach
Christmas Decorations In and around Newport Beach

Although the beach communities in Southern California don’t experience the dramatic change of seasons as other parts of the world do, it is always evident that the holidays are here. There are tree lighting ceremonies, holiday programs, and holiday decorations that are everywhere and always an opportunity to enjoy the holidays. I must say that one of my favorites is the wreath on the lifeguard tower in Laguna Beach. It is located on main beach, and is so festive with the waves in the background
Fashion Island never disappoints with holiday decor. With the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, Santa’s house, and the beautiful tree and decorations, Fashion Island is a wonderful place to enjoy the holiday season.

The different builder areas in Newport Coast including Crystal Cove add holiday decorations to enjoy.

And of course, the Christmas Tree at Fashion Island which was officially lit in November definitely adds to the holiday spirit.
Balboa Island also adds the the holiday spirit with decorations at the local fire station.

The Castaways in Newport Beach which is a private gated community also decorates for the holiday season.

The Village of Corona del Mar also decorates the median on the street. There are topiaries with Santa hats, as well as a Christmas tree with holiday decorations for the town and visitors to enjoy. Corona del Mar also enjoys an annual Christmas Walk each year which a great opportunity to network with friends and family.

This weekend, the Newport Beach Parade of Lights will be coming up, and the decor there is amazing. Boat owners go above and beyond with decorating their boats and yachts with lights and animation. I will definitely share some photographs.
I hope you enjoy these holiday photos and if I can answer any questions about the area, holiday celebrations, or real estate in Newport Beach, please contact me.
