Surf’s Up at Southern California Beaches
Surf’s Up at Southern California Beaches

This week has been glorious with warm weather and sunshine in the Newport Beach area. Last Sunday, on Valentine’s day, we rode our bikes to the Huntington Beach Pier to enjoy the California Sunshine and get some exercise at the same time. Huntington Beach is known as surf city.

This surfer at the Huntington Beach pier below creating a fan while surfing a wave in Surf City.

There was a good swell on Sunday, and there were lots of surfers out. The surfers surf right by the Huntington Beach pier, and it is a great opportunity to watch them. The pier was lined with observers.

As usual, Main Street in Huntington Beach was crowded with lots of people enjoying the weather and Valentines Day.
If you are looking for warmer weather, you might consider the coastal communities in Orange County including Newport Beach and Huntington Beach for a visit, or to live. If I can answer any questions about Newport Beach or Huntington Beach, please contact me.

Chino Airport – Planes of Fame Airshow
Chino Airport – Planes of Fame Airshow

The Planes of Fame Airshow is coming up on May 15-16, 2010 at Chino Airport. Chino Airport is located in Chino, California and is approximately 35 miles from the Newport Beach area. Chino Airport is located at :
Chino Airport
7000 Merrill Ave
Chino, CA 91710
(909) 597-3910
Chino Airport which is previously known as Cal Aero Field, is a general aviation airport. Chino Airport serves the general aviation community, as well as for business and corporate travel. The runways line up with the compass. Also, there are two directions of each runway depending upon which way the wind is blowing. Planes typically land into the wind, and if you are landing on Runway 26, then the other direction would be Runway 8.
Chino Airport which is situated on approximately 1,100 acres and has three runways: there are two parallel runways – Runway 8L-26R and Runway 8R-26L, and there is Runway 3-21 which crosses the parallel runways. Runway 8R-26L is 7000 feet long and 150 feet wide, and is the longest runway at Chino Airport. The parallel runway is 4,838 feet long and 150 feet wide. Runway 3-21 is which is crosses both Runways 8R-26L and Runway 8L-26R and is 4919 feet long and 150 feet wide. Generally, what that means is that larger air craft can take off and land at the longer run ways. Aircraft have a minimum take off and landing distance.

Chino Airport has many hangars that aviators either rent or own, and has over 100 businesses, 2 aircraft museums including the Planes of Fame museum. Also, Chino Airport is home to Flo’s Cafe. This is a great place to fly in eat breakfast or lunch and fly out. Some of the hangars that have recently been constructed are amazing. Many of the hangars have build outs inside them with kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. You can actually live in these build outs. Many of the occupants at Chino Airport have golf carts to travel around the airport. These hangars house some pretty amazing aircraft.

Something else to consider when selecting an airport to have as your home base is weather. Chino Airport does have fairly consistent weather. With the exception of occassional fog, and winter weather, Chino averages about 345 VFR (visual flight rules) days per year. Chino is also a great airport for pilots that are learning to fly. The controllers are very cooperative even though the airspace can be busy at times.
The airport identifier for Chino Airport is CNO and is a control tower operated airport.
Chino Airport has the Planes of Fame Air Show, and this year it is going to be held on May 15-16, 2010. The theme of the 2010 Airshow is “A Salute To The Greatest Generation.” In honor of the men and women whose provided service to the country during World War II, the the Museum will fly its aircraft. If you are interested in aviation, this is an air show not to be missed.
Below are photos of a Twin Cessna 340 – very nice airplane. I used to fly of these. I still love to see them.

Watching the planes take off and land is always something that I enjoy. Yesterday, we were watching planes take off and land. In the photos below, the plane has just rotated, and the pilot is raising the landing gear in the second photo.

We watched this plane fly into the sunset, and it was a very beautiful site.

And then here is a close up of the plane flying into the sunsest.

Newport Shores in Newport Beach – Awesome Wildlife
Newport Shores in Newport Beach
Awesome Wildlife

This past weekend was finally the reprieve from the continued the Southern California storms that we had here all week. However, many areas were (and probably still are) feeling the effects of last week storms.

Newport Shores is an area of Newport Beach that is surrounded by a Canal which is fed by the tide. As a result of the storms, the water became incredibly murky. On Sunday, we were looking out over the Canal and noticed something swimming in the water.

At first, we thought it was a shark, and a fairly good size one. Then as we were watching, it was a sting ray of some type. Then after taking a number of photos, I believe it was some type of eagle ray as the head was different than a sting ray. The Ray was at least three feet across, so it was fairly good size.

It was sad to watch it swimming around the Canal in Newport Shores because of the run off from the rain, the water was very murky, and we were concerned it could not navigate through such water. I am hoping he made it back out to the ocean safely where he belongs.

We enjoyed seeing this beautiful creature in the Newport Shores Canal in Newport Beach.
There has been a lot of different wild life in Newport Shores, including swans, geese, a seal, sand sharks, and all types of fish. But we have never seen a Ray before, and one this large.

Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA
Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA

One of the most highly sought after areas in Newport Beach include Balboa Island, which consists of three islands that are located within Newport Harbor. There is the main island, the little island and Collins Island.

Balboa Island has very beautiful homes, both bay-front and located on the streets that are all named after semi-precious stones. Some of the the bay-front homes may include a dock for different sized boats depending upon where the home is located. One of the best ways to enjoy the island is walk the island on the boardwalk on both the main island and the little island. You will see many people walking, jogging, and walking their dogs. Also, located on Balboa Island is the Balboa Island Ferry which was originated in 1909. The Balboa Island ferry is a three car ferry which transports vehicles, people and their bicycles to and from Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula. It is a brief journey, but enjoyable just the same.

Balboa Island is divided into three islands. The main island which has 1187 homes, the Little Island which is located across the Grand Canal has 229 homes. Collins Island which is located of the main Island has 8 homes. The streets of Balboa Island are named after Semi-precious stones including Abalone, Amethyst, Crystal, Jade, Onyx, Sapphire, and Coral to name a few which creates more charm in the area as seen in the photo above. The main street which you enter Balboa Island is Marine, and there are many shops and restaurants to enjoy located right along Marine Avenue. Most of the residents use golf carts to cruise around the island. Below is a photo of Marine Avenue on Balboa Island.

The history of Balboa Island is very interesting. William Collins, who was from Pasadena, California began dredging a channel on the north side of Newport bay and deposited the sand and silt on tide lands that would eventually become Balboa Island in 1908. As a result of piling up the silt and sand on the tide lands, this was the beginning of Balboa Island.
During this same time period, there were lots that were being offered for sale in the amounts of $350.00 to $750.00. Of course, the highest price lots were the ones that were located on the bay and waterfront. However, even though these lots were being advertised, many of the original lots were sold for as little as $25.00.

Balboa Island in Newport Beach was considered a place to go for summer vacations. Many of the Balboa Island homes did not have heaters, so these homes were used during the summer months, and many were often closed up for the winter. Tourists and families came to visit Balboa Island during the summer months and enjoy the climate in Newport Beach.
The growth of Balboa Island was slow initially, however in 1916 Balboa Island officially became part of the the City of Newport Beach.

Joe Beek who was also part of the initial development of Balboa Island. In 1919, Joe Beek obtained the first contract for a ferry between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula. The first car that was transported on the Balboa Island Ferry was in 1920, and it was for a fee of .10 cents. Joe Beek’s ferry boat was called the Joker, and the original capacity was two cars. The ferry is still in existence and t here are three 64 foot ferries, that have the capacity to carry three automobiles. Also, many bicyclists and pedestrians can ride for a fee as well. The ferry drivers are very skilled particularly during the summer months when Newport Harbor can be incredibly busy with the Newport Harbor boat traffic. It is a great way to travel from the Peninsula to the Island and enjoy the beauty of the Newport Harbor on the brief journey.

Balboa Island was also a place that was frequented by many celebrities. In fact, in the 1920’s and 1930’s, there were many movies that were filmed on Balboa Island. James Cagney officially purchased Collins Island in 1938 and then later sold in 1948.
There are some wonderful activities to enjoy on Balboa Island from swimming, kayaking, sailing, boating and fishing as seen below here.

Currently, the lowest priced home on Balboa Island is listed at 1305 Park is listed for $1,095,000, and the highest priced home is listed for 9,995,000 at 3 Collins Island. There is a consistent charm on Balboa Island. Balboa Island is a very desirable place to live in Newport Beach.
