Newport Beach Installs Emergency Notification System
Were you wondering what those tall sirens located in West Newport and the Balboa Peninsula were?
The city of Newport Beach has recently installed an outdoor emergency notification system in Newport Beach. The emergency sirens are located in west Newport at 58th Street near the tennis courts. The other locations for these emergency sirens are at the Balboa Peninsula at 15th Street near Veterans Park, and West Jetty View Park near the entrance to the wedge.
The emergency notification system will be tested regularly on the first Friday of each month at 12 pm (noon). The siren will be at a reduced decibel level between 60 and 100. The first testing will occur on January 11, 2011 at 12 pm. During actual emergencies, the decibel level will be higher level of 130 decibels.
The city of Newport Beach considers this to be a prudent act along the coastline, and in the event of an emergency, the residents of Newport Beach will be alerted by the use of these emergency sirens.

Additionally, you can register online at www.alertOC.com. It is a mass notification system which has been designed to keep the residents and businesses of Orange County residents informed of emergencies.
Sharon – What kind of emergency would you expect that these could help you with. I doubt if any tornados will be coming to Newport Beach any time soon.
HI Larry – The emergency notification here in Newport Beach is for the tsunami warnings. We had a tsunami alert here at that terrible earthquake in Japan.
