The Wedge in Newport Beach is located right at the jetty next to the entrance to Newport Harbor. The Wedge is known for the incredible surf that hits several times a year. Last year, during July, the surf was at least 20′, and there were body surfers, body boarders and there were even some surfers taking advantage. And it is usually an event when the surf is large, as visitors flock to the area to come and view such large waves.

You can see by these photos the incredible power of the surf. And during this weekend, there were lots of spectators!

Paddle Boarder Encounters Larry the Whale

Category: Area Events

Paddle Boarder Encounters Larry the Whale

Jodie Nelson, a professional surfer and Stand Up Paddle boarder became the first woman to paddle the 39.8 miles from Catalina Island to Dana Point on March 29, 2010 on a stand up paddle board. Jodie completed the paddle  in 9 hours, one minute and 21 seconds. This was done in an effort to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research and prevention.

Jodie Nelson a resident of San Clemente, California completed the nine hour paddle from Catalina Island to Dana Point Harbor on a stand up paddle board. Jodie Nelson was competing in this race to raise money for breast cancer awareness and prevention. Early detection is the cure. She was also paddling to inspire a friend who has been fighting breast cancer. Her mother and aunt are also breast cancer survivors.

During this incredible paddle, Jodie Nelson encountered a 30 foot Minke whale who swam with her for two hours during her incredible journey across the Pacific Ocean. According to the GrindTV blog, the whale swam next to her and blowing bubbles beneath her stand up paddle board.

What an incredible site, and I am sure seeing Larry the Whale must have inspired her to finish during her grueling paddle across the ocean.

Jodie Nelson is raising money for breast cancer awareness, and her charities are Keep a Breast Foundation, and Boarding for Breast Cancer.

What an experience! Thank you Jodie for raising money for this very important cause.

Newport Shores is surrounded by the Canal which is fed the tide. The water level rises along with the tide. There were previously geese, but now they are all gone.
