But I Am a Real Bird

Category: Off Topic

But I Am a Real Bird

Newport Shores in Newport Beach is home to many creatures including racoons, skunks (bummer for my dog Patrick), possums, herons, seagulls, ducks, wood ducks, and pelicans visit the Newport Shores area in the winter. It is always a treat when the swan comes to visit. She comes about once a year, and she is pretty tame, and will swim to you and enjoys eating bread.

Swan in Newport Shores

Yesterday, this beautiful swan was outside our deck, and my daughter was standing there with her bird sitting on her shoulder - affectionally named B Bird (ok – I know we are not that creative – but it works for him). B Bird is a brown headed parrot who is a hand fed baby, and is very tame, and about a year old ( and is lacking in any outside survival skills – like I said – a hand fed baby).

Suddenly, B Bird wanted to be a real bird and take flight – seriously right off my daughter’s shoulder and half way across the canal in Newport Shores. Well, B Bird didn’t sink (thank goodness), but he doesn’t have webbed feet to help him swim. So my Daughter Heather (the lifeguard) had to use to her life-guarding skills to rescue him yesterday. Off the edge of the deck into 60 degree water, she swam to get B Bird in her clothes (ripping her favorite tee shirt at the same time).

B Bird

And the swan booked it out of there when my daughter jumped into the water. But I do see that the swan is still around today.

Swan swimming away

B Bird was very wet, and shivering, and had never been that wet before. We dried him and made sure he was warm, and then B Bird had a visit to the vet to make sure he was going to be ok from his swim. $140 later, B Bird is on precautionary antibiotics, but is just fine. No harm, no foul (no pun intended!). B Bird just wanted to be a real bird like the other birds!

So – another day in Newport Shores.

What Criteria is Important in Selecting a Realtor

Category: General Information

What Criteria is Important in Selecting a Realtor

When you are considering hiring a Real Estate agent, what criteria do you consider when you are selecting that Real Estate Agent.  Do you talk to friends and family about who they used? A referral is always a good way to find a Realtor. Are you looking for a neighborhood specialist?  Are you considering hiring a relative out of obligation . . . Keep in mind, it is a business transaction from start to finish. Although it can be emotional when purchasing or selling a home, an experienced Real Estate agent can guide you through the process.

Make sure you do your research. Talk to your friends and family for a good referral. Inquire about the experience. When you called to speak to the Realtor you are considering, did they return your phone calls in a timely manner? Inquire about how they will communicate their marketing activities to you if you are selling. Real Estate transactions are a two way process. It is important for the Real Estate agent to adapt to their client’s expectations . . . some may prefer to receive communication via text, email, or weekly phone calls. These are all important considerations. Try and lay the ground work up in front to avoid any misunderstandings once you are working together.

If you are purchasing a home, has the Realtor explained the process in detail? Did they have you meet with a lender first? I would recommend having the purchase agreement and associated documents explained to ensure that the process is completely understood.

If you are looking for a “neighborhood” Realtor, consider using Google as a way to find out who is the one who has the most exposure in the area. Look at the neighborhood you are considering and Google that neighborhood.  See who comes up and look at their websites and blog sites.

If you are selling, and you have selected a few to consider, set up interviews and look at their preparedness. Do they have the information that will help you make an informed decision about pricing? Is the collateral material professional? What does their marketing material look like?

These are just a few considerations when you are selecting a Realtor.

If I can answer any questions about selecting a Realtor, or the process or either purchasing or selling a home, please contact me.

Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA

Category: Area Description, Neighborhoods in Newport

Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA

Home on Balboa Island on Pearl

One of the most highly sought after areas in Newport Beach include Balboa Island, which consists of three islands that are located within Newport Harbor. There is the main island, the little island and Collins Island.

Balboa Island Homes from water

Balboa Island has very beautiful homes, both bay-front and located on the streets that are all named after semi-precious stones.  Some of the the bay-front homes may include a dock for different sized boats depending upon where the home is located. One of the best ways to enjoy the island is walk the island on the boardwalk on both the main island and the little island. You will see many people walking, jogging, and walking their dogs. Also, located on Balboa Island is the Balboa Island Ferry which was originated in 1909. The Balboa Island ferry is a three car ferry which transports vehicles, people and their bicycles to and from Balboa Island and the Balboa Peninsula. It is a brief journey, but enjoyable just the same.

Balboa Island Street Signs

Balboa Island is divided into three islands. The  main island which has 1187 homes, the Little Island which is located across the Grand Canal has 229 homes. Collins Island which is located of the main Island has 8 homes. The streets of Balboa Island are named after Semi-precious stones including Abalone, Amethyst, Crystal, Jade, Onyx, Sapphire, and Coral to name a few which creates more charm in the area as seen in the photo above. The main street which you enter Balboa Island is Marine, and there are many shops and restaurants to enjoy located right along Marine Avenue. Most of the residents use golf carts to cruise around the island. Below is a photo of Marine Avenue on Balboa Island.

Marine Avenue

The history of Balboa Island is very interesting. William Collins, who was from Pasadena, California began dredging a channel on the north side of Newport bay and deposited the sand and silt on tide lands that would eventually become Balboa Island in 1908.  As a result of piling up the silt and sand on the tide lands, this was the beginning of Balboa Island.

During this same time period, there were lots that were being offered for sale in the amounts of $350.00 to $750.00. Of course, the highest price lots were the ones that were located on the bay and waterfront. However, even though these lots were being advertised, many of the original lots were sold for as little as $25.00.

Balboa Island Harbor View

Balboa Island in Newport Beach was considered a place to go for summer vacations. Many of the Balboa Island homes did not have heaters, so these homes were used during the summer months, and many were often closed up for the winter. Tourists and families came to visit Balboa Island during the summer months and enjoy the climate in Newport Beach.

The growth of Balboa Island was slow initially, however in 1916 Balboa Island officially became part of the the City of Newport Beach.

Balboa Island Homes on the Grand Canal

Joe Beek who was also part of the initial development of Balboa Island.  In 1919, Joe Beek obtained the first contract for a ferry between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula. The first car that was transported on the Balboa Island Ferry was in 1920, and it was for a fee of .10 cents.  Joe Beek’s ferry boat was called the Joker, and the original capacity was two cars. The ferry is still in existence and t here are three 64 foot ferries, that have the capacity to carry three automobiles. Also, many bicyclists and pedestrians can ride for a fee as well. The ferry drivers are very skilled particularly during the summer months when Newport Harbor can be incredibly busy with the Newport Harbor boat traffic. It is a great way to travel from the Peninsula to the Island and enjoy the beauty of the Newport Harbor on the brief journey.

Balboa Island Ferry

Balboa Island ferry

Balboa Island was also a place that was frequented by many celebrities. In fact, in the 1920’s and 1930’s, there were many movies that were filmed on Balboa Island. James Cagney officially purchased Collins Island in 1938 and then later sold in 1948.

There are some wonderful activities to enjoy on Balboa Island from swimming, kayaking, sailing, boating and fishing as seen below here.

Balboa Island Fishing

Currently, the lowest priced home on Balboa Island is listed at 1305 Park is listed for $1,095,000, and the highest priced home is listed for 9,995,000  at 3 Collins Island. There is a consistent charm on Balboa Island. Balboa Island is a very desirable place to live in Newport Beach.

Aloha Grill in Costa Mesa, CA

Aloha Grill and Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, CA

Aloha Grill and Tiki Bar

The Aloha Grill and Tiki Bar which is located at 1749 Newport Blvd in Costa Mesa is a casual restaurant with an indoor dining. There is an outdoor firepit to sit outside which creates very nice ambiance.

Aloha Grill

The Aloha Grill has a very tropical feel to it, and there is both indoor and outdoor dining to enjoy the California climate. There is also an aquarium which is in the wall which adds to the ambiance of this restaurant.

Aloha Grill

The Aloha Grill features Hawaiian style food, Pacific Rim Cuisine including steaks, ribs and seafood. My favorite so far is their fish tacos. And they have Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm where you can get fish tacos for $1 each! That’s right – $1. They also have half price on other food items from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday. Come on in and check it out.

 Walk in . . . hula out!
