Springtime in the Desert – Desert Horizons in Indian Wells
Springtime in the Desert – Desert Horizons in Indian Wells

Springtime in the desert is a very desirable time of year to visit the area. Indian Wells is located approximately 100 miles from the Newport Beach area. The Coachella Valley is a very beautiful area, with stunning mountains, clear blue skies, and it is a golf destination area. There are many golf courses located in the Coachella Valley, and there are also many professional golf tournaments as well including the Bob Hope Classic, and the Frank Sinatra Golf Tournament.

Desert Horizons is a gated community in the Indian Wells area. During the springtime, the weather is pleasant, not too warm, flowers are blooming and many golfers are returning to take advantage of this beautiful area. In Desert Horizons, there are both single family homes, and attached condos.

The golf course at Desert Horizons is beautiful, and has many water features (hazards) through out the course. I enjoyed viewing the green grass, and the flowers.

There are many birds and ducks as well that reside in the area.

The spring time is an excellent time of year to visit the desert.

Welcome Home to Newport Shores in Newport Beach
Welcome Home to Newport Shores in Newport Beach

Welcome home to Newport Shores. Newport Shores is a beach style community located at the west end of Newport Beach. It is located across the street from Coast Highway and Orange Street in Newport Beach.
Newport Shores is walking distance to a very desirable beach in Newport Beach, and a very sought after surfing spot as well – the River Jetty. Located on Coast Highway just outside of the Newport Shores community is the Frog House which sells surf boards, wetsuits, gear, DVD’s, leashes and apparell. Many locals visit the Frog House. The Frog House has been in existence since 1962 and is owned by TK Brimer.

Newport Shores has approximately 440 homes located in the area. Most of the homes are single family, however there are some duplexes. Newport Shores also has a community clubhouse, pool, tennis court, sand volley ball court, basketball court and two play areas for children.

When you reside in Newport Shores, it is definitely the beach life style. You can easily ride your bike to the Newport Pier or the Huntington Beach Pier. Below are photos of the Newport Beach pier.

There are community activities throughout the year in Newport Shores including a Fourth of July parade, Memorial Day barbecue, swim team during the summer months, tennis tournaments, and of course the Newport Shores Holiday Home Tour. The pool is heated during the summer months, and there is also a Newport Shores Swim Team. The heated pool in Newport Shores also does have a lifeguard on duty during the summer months.

Newport Shores is surrounded by the Canal which is fed the tide. The water level rises along with the tide. Occasionally, there is some unusual wildlife, and there was recently a ray swimming in the Canal as well. Other wildlife includes possums, raccoons, coyotes, and a swan which comes about once a year. There were previously geese, but now they are all gone.
Newport Shores is a very friendly community and the children who reside in this community attend one of the only schools on the beach in the country – Newport Elementary School. Known as the “best on the beach”, their playground is literally – the beach. Many of the children ride their bikes to school, and it is a beautiful way to begin your day riding along the boardwalk and taking in the beautiful ocean.

Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach
Victoria Beach in Laguna Beach

Victoria Beach is located off Victoria Street off Coast Highway in South Laguna Beach. It is a beautiful beach and private location which and a great place to explore, swim, and skim board.
Victoria Beach does have public access off Victoria, and it is a fairly easy walk down the stairs, definitely not as steep as 1000 Steps Beach in Laguna Beach. Victoria Beach does have very nice sandy beaches, and there is an on shore break, and rip tides do come up occasionally. It can be treacherous if there is larger surf or high tide. It is always recommended to swim near a lifeguard.
Victoria Beach does not have facilities on the beach. Victoria Beach is a marine protected area.

It is a pretty interesting beach however, because if you hike across the rocks, there is an old light tower, and a pool which was constructed some time ago. The pool fills with the ocean when the tide is high.

The Light House on Victoria Beach is pretty interesting to see and definitely to photograph. It was pretty overcast yesterday as you can tell by the photos.

Victoria Beach offers tide pools to explore and discover sea creatures.

It is a beautiful beach, and does have homes located in the area. There is also a private gated area called Lagunita and the residents of Lagunita utilize this beach as well. There is no private parking, so if you are intending to visit Victoria Beach, then it would be best to get there early so you can secure parking.

Pelicans in Newport Beach
Pelicans in Newport Beach
I bet you thought by the title of this post, I would be writing about a neighborhood in Newport Beach. Actually, there are several neighborhoods in Newport Coast that utilize the word Pelican – Pelican Hill and Pelican Crest.
Today, I was on the Newport Beach Pier in Newport Beach. The Tsunami Advisory was issued in Newport Beach today, and we walked to the end of the pier. Sitting atop one of the structures were several Pelicans. And they were incredibly tame. In fact, it almost appeared as though they were posing for the camera.

Historically, there are a number of anglers on the pier, so I am sure that why they are so docile – hoping for some fish.
These two below look like buddies!

They were stretching and it looked as though they were yawning!

They were relaxed as they were resting.

This last one is my favorite, he is really looking down his beak at me! But didn’t even flinch or mind the photos!

Winter in Newport Beach
Winter in Newport Beach
Yesterday was a beautiful day in Newport Beach. It rained on Friday, and it always looks so clear after the rain. Driving down Superior Boulevard in Newport Beach is something I always enjoy as the view of the ocean is beautiful. The sun was shimmering off the ocean, and there was a good view of Catalina Island as well. Also, there were some sail boats in the distance enjoying the weather.

At the end of the day yesterday, there was a beautiful sunset down by the Newport Pier. Another beautiful day in Newport Beach.
