It is that time of year again to begin preparing for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Try-Outs. On January 17, 2017, you will need to log on the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard site to enroll your child in the program. If you have never been enrolled, then beginning January 17, you will need to create a new account

If your child has previously participated, beginning January 17, please login and sign-up using your prior account information.  Do not create new account. Please view the enrollment page here.

The next step is to Try Out! The swim test will be held at the Corona del Mar High School pool located at 2101 Eastbluff Drive, Corona del Mar, CA 92660. The try out dates are as follows for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program:

• Sunday, March 5, 2017 – 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
• Saturday, March 11, 2017 – 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
• Sunday, March 19, 2017 – 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
• Make-up dates are not offered.

The swim requires are: . Must swim 100 yards (4 lengths of a 25 yard pool) in the times listed during the try outs. The child may try out with a  maximum of 5 attempts in the course of the 3 tryout days.

The time frames that must be met are:

9 year olds: 1:55
10-11 year olds: 1:45
12-13 year olds: 1:40
14-15 year olds: 1:35

And tread water for 3 minutes without holding on to side of pool.

There are specific criteria on what to bring to the tryouts including a signed waiver and proof of age. Please see the swim test site for specifics.

So despite our cold weather it is important to start practicing and many of the pools are heated. The Newport Shores pool is  heated for Newport Shores residents, and there are many programs that the children may participate in.
